The following file contains important last minute notes and issues relating
to Activ E-Book version 4.22, some of which are not covered by the
main documentation.
If you are new to using the software, we recommend that you start out by
reading through the "Help" guide. You will find an icon for this in the
Activ E-Book Compiler program group.

1. How To Get Started
=====================
Now that you have installed Activ E-Book Compiler you will find a group
of programs under your Start menu.
If you are new to using the software, we'd suggest you start out by looking
at the "Help" item in this group. In the "Help" you will find a complete
explanation of all the features of the software, as well as many tips and
tutorials. If you are new to using the software, we recommend that you start
out by reading through the "Help" guide.
The full list of items in this group are:-
* Activ E-Book Compiler
This is the "compiler" that creates e-books from your HTML and graphics
files.
* Activ Key Recovery
This is a utility for registered users. It allows them to restore their
registration key in case of a hard-disk crash. If you are using the
free version, simply ignore this program.
* Activ Quick Project
This a tool for preparing e-book projects (before you put them into the
compiler). It will help you create a suitable folder structure for
organizing your work, as well as give you specific instructions about
how to prepare your materials to put them into the e-book.
* Help
This is an e-book that we created (see we use our own software!) that
explains all the features of the software, as well as containing many
tips and tutorials.
* License Agreement
This is the terms of agreement under which you are using the software.
This the same text as you read during the install process, but we have
included another copy for your reference.
* Readme File
This is this file! Assorted notes and so on.
=============================================================================
2. If you need Help
===================
Here are sources of information if you need Help.
* Save yourself time by checking the Help documentation. In the Reference
section are answers to the most common questions about the software.
* You can use our free discussion forum at www.ebookfriends.com. The board
is staffed by us and our talented team of moderators, and you may well find
that another user of the software has already figured out the answer to your
question, or can otherwise usefully contribute.
* We maintain a free tutorial and information site at www.ebookapprentice.com
* You can also e-mail us at webmaster@ebookcompiler.com. This e-mail is
automatically forwarded to whoever is dealing with e-mail at our company.
In almost all cases, we will answer within 2 business days, and often
sooner.
* If you send e-mail to a particular person that you know in our company,
then of course they will answer, but if they are working on another project
or are on vacation, you may be left waiting. Therefore try to use the generic
address, webmaster@ebookcompiler.com, unless you know the person is
definitely going to be around.
* We maintain a free discussion board at www.ebookfriends.com. Simply register
and post your questions in the appropriate forum. Better yet, you can see
questions, answers and general discussions with other e-book authors.
* You can also telephone or fax us, on +44 1494 438 603. UK callers, dial
01494 438 603. We can not guarantee an immediate response to telephone or fax
calls, but you can leave a message. Please make sure to leave your full email
address (spell it out!) so we can email a response.

3. Affiliate Program
====================

** IMPORTANT ** DON'T MISS THIS **
For those of you who elect to join our ebookcompiler.com affiliate program
(which we run in conjunction with leading affiliate solutions network,
ClickBank), and are also creating e-books - you can earn extra income if
people find out about us as a result of reading your e-book.
Click Edit / System Pages and enter your Clickbank Affiliate nickname (only
available if you are using a System Generated About page) into About
settings. This "stamps" your referral code into the About page of your
e-book.
If people find out about our software as a result of your "stamped"
e-book and ending buying our software - we give you credit for the sale.
(This option is will initially only be available for Clickbank affiliates
of EBookCompiler.com)
AFFILIATE QUICK START PLAN
First, create a page on your site about Activ E-Book Compiler. On the page
tell people about the software and give a personal recommendation. This
will work far more effectively than banners. Here are some ideas of how
you can promote this page:
(a) Submit this page to search engines.
(b) Link to this page from every other page on your site.
(c) Link to this page from your e-books : "How I created this e-book"
(d) If you have your own opt-in ezine - mention this page and the URL in
each issue.
(e) Advertise this page in other people's Ezines. If you have your own
Ezine, then you will probably find that many webmasters with similiar
size Ezines may be prepared to "swap" ads with you. Using this method,
you an advertise for free.
(f) Submit articles to ezines or to sites which accept articles. When
you submit articles, you will usually be allowed to include a resource box
mentioning who you are and your business - so in the "resource box" and
also include a link saying how you created the e-book. Here is a sample:
SAMPLE RESOURCE BOX
John Smith is the author of the e-book "How to teach your dog to sing".
Download this free e-book today from http://www.johnsmithdogsing.com
or read about how he quickly and easily creates e-books at
http://www.johnsmithdogsing.com/author.htm
(g) Create an e-mail signature file similar to the above resource box and
include it in all your correspondence. Join e-mail discussion lists of
interest to yourself and other webmarketers and when posting to the list
everybody will see your signature. Please be sure to only join lists that
you intend to genuinely participate in - and which allow signatures to be
used.
There is information about using opt-in mailing and ezines, (including links
to directories of ezines which accept ads, swaps ads, and ezine publishers
who accept article submissions) at:

4. Changes between this version (4) and the previous versions
================================================================
The following is a summary list of the changes and improvements in version 4
as compared to the previous 3.02 version.
If you are familiar with a previous version of Activ E-Book Compiler then
this may be of interest. If this version is the first version of Activ E-Book
Compiler that you've used then we suggest you ignore this section and proceed
directly to using the software.
---------------------------
CHANGES TO PACKAGE CONTENTS
---------------------------
LICENSE CHANGES
The license agreement has been modified. By using the latest version, you
are agreeing to the revised license agreement.
Specifically the changes are:
(1) In previous versions, there was the following term:
USER may not offer services to any third party, where the USER creates or
compiles e-books for the third party either for free or in return for any
form of consideration.
It was never our desire to stop people working as a group, or assisting
friends, colleagues or business associates with creating e-books. Our sole
intention was to prevent people installing the software on a server (or a
similar) and providing a platform for multiple people to use one copy of the
software. We have therefore revised this term to read:
The license is granted to USER only. The USER may not install the software
in any form of environment which allows other parties access to the
software, for example via remote- or web-based access, whether for free or
in return for any form of consideration. This includes, but is not limited
to, providing remote access over a network, over the Internet, or a
web-site.
(2) The new version of Activ E-Book Compiler is able to produce "Rebrander"
programs, which can allow your users to customize your own e-book with
information such as their name. For example if you run an affiliate program,
you might allow each affiliate to customize their e-book with their affiliate
ID.
You are allowed to redistribute the "Rebrander" programs you create. The
rules are identical to distributing e-books, and to allow for this we have
added the following statement in the definitions section.
For the purposes of this agreement, "Rebrander Programs", which can
optionally be created with Activ E-Book Compiler shall also be considered
e-books.
(3) We have clarified the definition of "REGISTERED USER". In previous
versions this was defined:
"REGISTERED USER": A USER who has paid the registration fee to ANSWERS
2000, for use of Activ E-Book Compiler on a particular computer.
We now define it as follows (we do not believe this clarification affects
the underlying principles or your rights, it is simply to make the situation
clearer):
"REGISTERED USER": A USER who has paid the registration fee to ANSWERS
2000, for use of Activ E-Book Compiler on a particular computer. In
the event that a REGISTERED USER is refunded or the registration fee
is charged back, said USER shall revert to being an UNREGISTERED USER.
(4) We have added a new item under REGISTRATION (item 5).
The primary purpose of this modification is simply clarification of what we
believe is already the legal situation.
We have also (sadly) felt it necessary to include the last sentence in this
term as additional protection for our company and our staff. To date we have
never needed this sentence, and hopefully we will never need to apply it.
But as a precautionary measure, we feel that we must be absolutely clear
that we can and will turn away business under exceptional circumstances. For
example, if somebody is harassing or stalking our staff, we do not want them
as a customer.
ANSWERS 2000 is not obligated to accept the registration fees from any
person or entity. ANSWERS 2000 will determine at its sole discretion
from whom and under what circumstances it will accept registration fees.
ANSWERS 2000 may publish on its web site, conditions on the acceptance
of registration fees, including, but not limited to, methods of payment
accepted, and geographical locations of customers. Additionally ANSWERS
2000 may at any time notify an UNREGISTERED USER in writing or via
e-mail that they do not wish that person or entity's custom.

ID.

* PreProcessor setting added to Properties page of HTML files.
* If the Output E-Book EXE file is one of the source files for the e-book,
this file is automatically excluded whenever a refresh occurs. This prevents
a situation where each re-Build of the e-book contains the previously output
version of the e-book, leading to the EXE growing larger and larger forever.
* If the Output Rebrander EXE file is one of the source files for the e-book,
this file is automatically excluded whenever a refresh occurs.
* Sort codes are now "invisible" to the user interface. The same effects
can be achieved directly through the user interface without entering code
numbers.

* Edit / This File / Toggle Password Protection is grayed except when an HTML
file is selected (in previous versions this would generate an error message,
if a non-HTML file was selected).
* Edit / This File / Searchable is grayed except when an HTML file is
selected (in previous versions this would generate an error message, if a
non-HTML file was selected).
* Edit / This File / Table Of Contents is grayed except when an HTML file is
selected (in previous versions this would generate an error message, if a
non-HTML file was selected).
* Cosmetic. The "Password Protected" option on the File Properties dialog
box as been renamed "Password Protection" to make it consistent with other
parts of the software.
OPTIONS FOR AFFILIATES
* The menu and toolbar option for "Free Affiliate Money" has been removed.
The equivalent option has now been placed on the About page of Edit System
Pages.
OPTIONS FOR OUTPUT
* The compiler can now create two output files per build: the e-book and
optionally a Rebrander for the e-book.
* The text in the Output tab for the e-book program has been changed to
"Output E-Book EXE" for the e-book file.
* There are now two dialogs for selecting the Output file(s). The simple one,
(which is the same as in the old version, but with a modified title) which
is shown if no Output has been selected prior to click Build or Run, allows
you simply to select the e-book EXE. The more complex version which is shown
when you click Edit Output allows control over the Rebrander too.
* You can build a Rebrander at the same time as building your e-book. The
more complex version of the Edit Output dialog controls these options.
* Cosmetic. Changed the menu option 'Build E-Book' to simply 'Build'.
* Cosmetic. Changed the status line message for Build.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Changed (and fixed a minor grammatical error) in the
status line message for Run.
OPTIONS FOR TESTING
* Cosmetic. Changed the status line message for 'Correct Password Entered'
menu.
* Cosmetic. Changed the status line message for 'Not Expired' menu.
* Cosmetic. Changed the status line message for 'Expired' menu.
BUILD PROCESS CHANGES
* The e-book EXE files produced using this version are substantially
smaller. We are now using compression on the e-book program code, reducing
the default footprint of the EXE to less than half that of the previous
version.
(note in versions 4.01, 4.20, 4.21 and 4.22 we have temporarily removed this
compression as there is an issue with some Norton utilities - see the note at
the end of this file).
* The compiler automatically refreshes the files list, when you Build or Run
an e-book. This generally avoids the situation where the user add files into
the source folder, but forgets to Refresh Files, causing there to be missing
files or broken images in the final e-book.
* Compression speeded up. This should speed up compiling very large e-books.
It may not be particularly noticeable for smaller e-books.
* Added a progress message as soon as e-book EXE is started being prepared.
* In previous versions, if you tried to re-Build an e-book while it is still
running (even if was closed but is taking time to clean up), a Sharing
Violation error was immediately generated. The new version will retry up to
8 times at 1 second intervals (7 seconds total as the first try occurs
immediately) before generating this error. This reduces the occurrence of
Sharing Violations.
* The Pop-up List for Table Of Contents button was always limited to 20
items. In previous versions, the list automatically was truncated after the
first 20. The new version issues a warning and gives you a choice to turn
off the Pop-up if there are more than 20 files in the Table Of Contents and
you had the setting (controllable from Edit/User Interface) turned on.
* Activ Variables are included in the build, and checked during the build
process.
* A "magic number" identifying the build is built into each build. This is
used by the Rebranding tools.
* The icon is burnt into the e-books at a different stage in the compilation
process. One of the reasons we have made this change, is that one particular
anti-virus package has a bug that misinterpreted the way we did it in
previous versions as a virus contamination (which it obviously is not).
* After a successful Build (not Run) a dialog is displayed showing the
programs built (e-book and possibly the Rebrander), file locations and
sizes.
* The Run e-book option now uses the "Show Normal" option instead of
the "Show Maximized" option. This means the e-book will always run
with the sizing set by the author.
* Cosmetic. Error message when a refresh is needed has the been changed. This
should occur far less often in any case because of the automatic refresh.
* Cosmetic. Error message when no source files in the folder has been
changed.
* Cosmetic. Error message when more than one index (the entry page) has been
changed.
* Cosmetic. Error message when no Output E-Book EXE has been changed.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: A number of missing final full-stops (periods) in
build errors were corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: corrected minor grammatical error in the message shown
when the custom icon couldn't be written to the e-book EXE.
* Bug Fix: if the build was successful, one of the temporary files was closed
twice. To the best of our knowledge, this minor bug, apparently caused no
user visible problems.
* Bug Fix: the software did not fully check that the icon was correctly
written to the final e-book. To the best of our knowledge, this minor bug,
apparently caused no user visible problems.
MISCELLANEOUS COMPILER USER INTERFACE CHANGES
* Cosmetic: Tabs, menus and toolbars have been re-ordered into a more logical
order. Files is now the 2nd to last tab. The menus reflect this ordering,
and the various files and output related buttons are grouped together.
* Bug Fix: Ctrl+B for Build on Build menu didn't work in previous versions.
* Bug Fix: Ctrl+R for Run on Build menu didn't work in previous versions.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for File/New corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for File/Open corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for File/Save corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for File/Save As corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for File/(most recently used files lists)
corrected.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: status line for Edit Properties was grammatically
incorrect.
----------------------
E-BOOK RUNTIME CHANGES
----------------------
E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES
* Decompression speeded up. This should speed up the start up process
for very large e-books. It may not be particularly noticeable for smaller
e-books.
* As e-book closes a flush is done of temporary Internet Files. (Versions
4.00 and 4.01 only - this is more selective in version 4.20 and later - see
note below).
* Bug Fix: The algorithm for the update after entering a correct password has
been changed. In previous versions, on some PCs, there was a problem that the
content did not update unless the e-book was closed and reopened. This
change should (hopefully) rectify this problem. We have had some difficulty
in consistently replicating this problem (although we have replicated it on
one Windows 98 and this fix works), so we are not 100% certain whether this
cures the problem in all cases.
E-BOOK VIEWER USER INTERFACE CHANGES
* Support for Activ Variables.
* Support for Activ Script.
* Support for PreProcessor.
* Ctrl+H is now a short-cut key equivalent to the Home command on the Go
menu.
* Ctrl+K is now a short-cut key equivalent to the Enter Password command on
the Options menu.
* Ctrl+S is now a short-cut key equivalent to the Search command on the Go
menu.
* Ctrl+T is now a short-cut key equivalent to the Table Of Contents command
on the Go menu.
* Toolbar button for Find added (this button is off by default).
* Toolbar button for Size added (this button is off by default).
* Toolbar button for Print, visual appearance modified slightly.
* Toolbar can be positioned top, left, right or bottom depending on choice
in the Edit User Interface screen of the compiler.
* Cosmetic. Removed separators between toolbar buttons.
* Cosmetic. Gripper removed from Toolbar.
* System generated pages, including Table Of Contents and Search results,
now use double quotes to enclose links to other pages on the e-book. This
allows file names containing spaces, which were problematic in previous
versions.
* System generated pages (About, Table Of Contents, Search results, and
Cover page in unregistered version) are now based on a percentage of the
screen size rather than fixed to a predefined width. This means the pages
will display better for e-books limited to a small window size.
* System generated Password Protection page has been modified:
- "Click here to get your password." has been changed to
"Click here to get your password, then press Ctrl+K to enter it."
- Entering a URL where the password can be found in the compiler is
now optional. If you don't enter a URL - this text is omitted from
the System generated page.
* Bug Fix: When you start an e-book, in previous versions if the e-book
had a custom size specified, it could appear at the correct size for a
a moment (while loading), and then move to a different screen location. In
this version, the e-book will appear, from the start, at the correct location
and size.
* Bug Fix: In the "Toolbar can be toggled on/off" option in the Edit User
Interface dialog box. This did not function correctly in version 3.01 and
3.02. When this option was unchecked, the buttons on the toolbar would not
function at all.
* Bug Fix: For e-books compiled with Open Internet links in new (browser)
window open set to on (the default). In previous versions, links to secure
web sites (https://) were incorrectly, not automatically opened in a new
window. This is now fixed.
* Bug Fix: When click Enter Password and pressed Cancel. Previously this
acted the same as pressing okay, for example, displaying the incorrect
Password message.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Doesn't do a refresh if you enter the wrong password.
This was unnecessary.
* When you follow an Internet link and it auto-opens into a new browser
window, this process now takes place more efficiently, and with a higher
degree of compatibility with IE's standard behaviour.
* Cosmetic. The title bar for message boxes is now the title of the e-book
rather than "Activ E-Book".
* Add-ins may be program names (optionally including Activ Variables in the
path) or Activ Scripts using the ##, #!, or #@ symbols.
* The On Start Add-in runs at a different point (later in the sequence).
* The On Exit Add-in runs at a different point (earlier in the sequence).
* On Correct Password Add-in runs after the Password Correct Message Box
(previously it ran before).
* On Wrong Password Add-in runs after the Password Incorrect Message Box
(previously it ran before).
* Bug fix: Version 3.0x of Activ E-Book Compiler ran add-in programs with
the maximized parameter. This is now left for the program itself to decide.
* Bug fix: The Add-in paths did not correctly substitute the choice of
Activ Variables in version 3.0x.
* Start Up Message is now displayed later in the Start sequence. This
leads to a cleaner result when you run the e-book.
* Bug fix: Command line was not processed correctly and could lead to
crashing the e-book.
* Cosmetic: Ellipsis removed from Help / About menu option (strictly speaking
this was incorrect as no dialog box is displayed as a result of this option).
---------------
ACTIV VARIABLES
---------------
* A variety (59) of predefined Activ Variables (these are expanded to the correct
string at the appropriate time), are now supported.
* Activ Variables are supported in the following places:
- in Add-In paths (previously this supported a subset of these variables)
- in Activ Links and Activ Scripts (themselves both new features)
- for those HTML files for which the PreProcessor as been enabled:
when enclosed in square brackets, with a preceeding = sign, as in this
example: [={esbn}]
------------
PREPROCESSOR
------------
* In the compiler, for each HTML file you can turn on the PreProcessor.
The PreProcessor substitutes the Activ Varaibles with their values,
provided the variable is enclosed in angular brackets, example: <{esbn}>.
* The PreProcessor does marginally slow the e-book startup process for each
file for which it is enabled. We recommend that you only enable the
PreProcessor for those files where it is required.
------------
ACTIV SCRIPT
------------
* Information on Activ Script is included in the Help documentation.
-----------
ACTIV LINKS
-----------
* The following types of Activ Links are supported:
## used to denote an Immediate Activ Link.
#! used to denote an Internal Script file.
#@ used to denote an External Script file.
* Documentation on this topic is included in the Help documentation.

5. Additional changes subsequent to 4.00
========================================
=======================
CHANGES IN VERSION 4.01
=======================
----------------------
Software/Compatibility
----------------------
Version 4.00 of the e-book and Rebrander used UPX compression to compress
the code (the content of your e-books is compressed using a different method).
Unfortunately there is a compatibility issue with some versions of Norton
anti-virus and possibly other Norton tools. This problem can cause e-books
to take a long time to start and/or compile and/or inflate their memory usage.
The problem is NOT caused by a virus.
We believe that this problem is caused by an issue within the Norton
anti-virus software which occurs when "Auto Protect" is enabled within
Norton, and affects all UPX compressed programs (not just e-books).
The authors of UPX state that Symantec engineers have been made of aware
of this issue for sometime.
While we hope that Symantec will address the issue, we can not guarantee
that they will, and will monitor the situation going forward.
As we can not guarantee that Symantec will address this issue, we have
removed UPX compression from 4.01. This resolves the problem, but will
result in larger e-books and Rebranders.
If you would like to comment to Symantec, and suggest that they address the
issue of Norton anti-virus conflicting with UPX compressed programs, then
their web site is http://www.symantec.com - and includes a list of telephone
numbers and contact e-mail addresses.

-------------------
CHANGES TO COMPILER
-------------------
BUILD PROCESS CHANGES
* Bug Fix: "Share violation" which was used as a generic error if the
e-book or rebrander EXE could not be written, is replaced with a more
specific message. (one of which is Share violation, but there are others
too depending on the circumstnaces).
* Bug Fix: In the event of being unable to write to the e-book or rebrander,
the retry process will only occur if the cause was a share violating.
* Cosmetic: Several of the error messages for compiler errors have been
expanded and/or improved.
* Bug Fix: Corrected a bug which could potentially (never seemed to in
practise) cause a crash compiling an e-book containing variables.
* Added additional splash screen parameters.
* Added language data file to compilation process.
* Added toolbar data file to compilation process.
TRIAL VERSION
* The number of files allowed in e-books created with the trial version
is now increased to 25 (previously 10).
FILE FORMAT CHANGES
* File Format for saved projects updated to version 4.20. This version of
the compiler will read projects created with previous versions, but
previous compiler versions will not read projects created with this
version.
FILE / OPEN
* You can not load HTML, EXE, PPT, or DOC files into Activ E-Book Compiler.
(Instead you can EITHER load either a saved project settings file, which has
a .AEP extension, OR you place the HTML versions of the documents in a folder
and then do Scan Folder). The Compiler now detects if you attempt to load
one of these file types are generates an error message.
OPTIONS FOR E-BOOK SECURITY
* Bug Fix: Load option would not previously load a text of file of exactly
1000 passwords (it worked fine for 999 passwords). Fixed in this version.
* New button: Advanced - leads to an Advanced options dialog box.
* Added Advanced options dialog box this allows setting the File Protection
for HTML Files and Cache Protection, as well as insertion of 4 X 8 digit
Security Codes.
* File Protection for HTML Files can be set to Low Security or High Security.
In general, High Security is recommended. In this case, HTML files are
stored in encrypted format at runtime. (Low Security is equivalent to
previous versions). See E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES (below).
* File Protection for Cache Protection can be set to Low Security or High
Security. In general Low Security is recommended. If this setting is set
to High Security, the cache clearance routine operations after every
navigate operation and every Activ Link. See E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES
(below).
OPTIONS FOR MODIFYING E-BOOK START UP BEHAVIOUR
* New option to set the extra delay for the splash screen.
* New option to set whether a percentage bar is shown the splash screen.
* The Start Up tab has been reorganized for a neater layout.
OPTIONS FOR MODIFYING E-BOOK USER INTERFACE
* New option to show/hide Previous Toolbar button.
* New option to show/hide Next Toolbar button.
* New option to determine if Previous/Next loop through Table Of
Contents.
* New option to show/hide Exit Toolbar button.
* New option to show/hide link destinations in Status Bar text.
* New option to display or hide link destinations in Next/Previous
Tooltips.
* New option to enable Balloon Tooltips.
* New option to determine if Tooltips display long or short
descriptions.
* New option to hide scroll bars.
* New option for selecting language file. This is documented in the
Advanced Features section of the Help.
* New options for editing language files. This is documented in the
Advanced Features section of the Help.
OPTIONS FOR SYSTEM PAGES
* The color selection combo/pop-up boxes (Edit System Pages) now display
colors using a custom palette. This means the colors more closely (hopefully
exactly if you have a 256+ color screen) reflect the final colors.
* The color selection combo box shows the hexadecimal color code for the
selected color.
* The color pop-up shows the hexadecimal color code for the selecting color
in a floating box.
OPTIONS FOR MANIPULATING E-BOOK FILES
* Edit / This File / Move Up is now faster. This is not very noticeable for
small e-books, but is very noticeable for e-books containing a large number
of HTML files.
* New option - Edit / This File / Move Down. This is not very noticeable for
small e-books, but is very noticeable for e-books containing a large number
of HTML files.
INTERNAL CHANGES
* Bug Fix: A number of files will were opened with a missing share mode
setting. While it could be argued that technically this was a bug, it did not
appear to have any visible effect.
----------------------
E-BOOK RUNTIME CHANGES
----------------------
GENERAL CHANGES
* Support for local processing of FORMs on the client using Activ Script.
Set METHOD=POST and ACTION= to an Activ Link (to run the script). A new
Activ Script command, FSET, allows you to retrieve values from the last form
submitted into Activ Variables.
TRIAL VERSION
* The number of files allowed in e-books created with the trial version
is now increased to 25 (previously 10).
E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES
* If File Protection for HTML Files is set to High Security (Edit Security,
Advanced), then HTML files are stored in encrypted format after unpacking.
* Temporary Internet Files cache was cleared in versions 4.00 and 4.01 when
the e-book exits. In version 4.20, the cache is cleared only of those entries
which correspond to pages contained within this e-book. (This applies for
all following items relating to Temporary Internet Files cache listed below).
* Temporary Internet Files cache is also cleared of pages created by this
e-book after entering the correct password.
* Temporary Internet Files cache is also cleared of pages created by this
e-book before displaying search results
* Temporary Internet Files cache is also cleared of pages created by this
e-book before the DISPLAY Activ Script statement is executed.
* Temporary Internet Files cache is also cleared of pages created by this
e-book when the e-book is started.
* Temporary Internet Files cache can be cleared after each navigate by
setting Cache Protection to High Security in Edit Security - Advanced.
* Compression/Decompression code speeded up, buffer sizes increased.
* Decompress speed up, skip a temporary stage where possible (applies on
files less than 256K when compressed).
* PreProcessor speeded up on both compressed and non-compressed files.
* Files which save less than 25 bytes by being compressed (i.e. savings
are not worth having) are not compressed. Rationale: Reduction in unnecessary
decompression speeds up e-book opening.
* Implemented a memory caching and read-ahead feature for e-book start up.
This will speed up e-book opening especially for e-books which contain
a lot of files, variables or passwords.
* Language data is now stored in a separate (internal file). This typically
saves about 40K-50K from the e-book EXE file size.
* Bug fix: If the e-book had expired, previously all files were locked out
for access. This is now changed to only files with a .html or .htm extension.
This means that it is now possible to use Activ Scripts, images etc.
in an expired e-book.
* Temporary files explicitly have the temporary attribute set (internal
change). On some systems, this may result in a performance boost.
E-BOOK VIEWER USER INTERFACE CHANGES
* In 4.20 the splash screen is displayed earlier during the e-book start up.
This means for large e-books, visible screen activity starts sooner.
* Splash screen implements additional delay as set by the compiler.
* Splash screen implements percentage while loading option as set by the
compiler.
* Status bar text changes implemented.
* Status bar text changes can be set to show navigational information or not.
* If status bar is set to show navigational information: For links to files
which are part of the e-book it will substitute the title as set in the Files
tab of the compiler. For links to external files and Activ Scripts, no URL will be
displayed in the status bar.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Mouse over on View/Toolbar menu option may not have
always displayed the status text correctly.
* Next + Previous toolbar buttons (which sequentially navigates the Table Of
Contents).
* Next + Previous accelerator keys (ALT+Down Arrow and ALT+Up Arrow
respectively)
* Next + Previous options on the Go menu.
* Next + Previous options on pop-up menu.
* Next + Previous options can be set to loop around on reaching the beginning
or end, or set to stop at beginning/end.
* Exit toolbar button.
* Tooltips on toolbar can be set to show balloon tips or traditional tips.
(note: on some very old Win 95 systems, balloon tips will always show as
traditional tips even if enabled, this is a Windows limitation).
* Tooltips for toolbar can be set to short or long descriptions.
* Tooltips on toolbar can be set to show name of destination for
Next + Previous.
* Bug Fix: After changing the font size from Medium, and closing and
re-opening the font size would be correctly set, but the Medium option would
also be checked. Corrected in this version.
* Scroll bars can be permanently switched off.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Close system menu's Status Bar text was
incorrect (referred to saving).
* Cosmetic. Change the Exit system menu Status Bar text change to
"Close this e-book" as opposed to quitting the application.
* New Feature: PrintScreen and ALT+PrintScreen are disabled (this is
relatively crude but effective) if the e-book is running, not minimized, and
copying is disabled (Edit Security in the compiler). See Limitations at the
end of this document.
* Toolbar graphics are now retrieved from toolbar data file. This saves
some space, and also potentially allows you to customize the appearance
of the buttons.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Caption of Alerts from JavaScript now shows the title
of the e-book instead of "Microsoft Internet Explorer"
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Print Setup dialog's icon is now the icon for the
e-book.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: Find dialog's icon is now the icon for the e-book.
* Bug Fix: Ctrl+N is now disabled.
* Bug Fix: If copy is disabled drag and drop, is disabled. (Internally
this feature is implemented by cancelling the drag and drop by simulating
the Escape key press). Note this feature is temporarily disabled in 4.22 and
later (see note below)
* Bug Fix: Alt+Left Arrow (Accelerator key for Back) did not always work
in this unusual circumstance: the user has navigated to another page without
clicking on the content of any page (example: by using Toolbar).
* Bug Fix: Alt+Right Arrow (Accelerator key for Forward) did not always work
in this unusual circumstance: the user has navigated to another page and
then clicked Back without clicking on the content of any page (example: by
using Toolbar).
E-BOOK PRINTING CHANGES
* New feature: The printing headers and footers are now generated from
information in language file.
* Activ Variables are implemented on both the header and footer.
* Additional the various Internet Explorer escape codes such &p to show the
page number are also available.
* By default, the header shows the e-book's title on the left, and on the
right, the "Page X of Y"
* By default, the footer shows the e-book's copyright message on the left,
and the short date (formatted according to Control Panel settings) on
the right.
ACTIV SCRIPT
* New feature: Invoke Activ Links using the FORM METHOD=POST
* New statement: FSET - retrieves form variables entered from the last
form that triggered an Activ Link.
* New statement: NEXT - equivalent to pressing next button
* New statement: PREVIOUS - equivalent to pressing previous button
* New statement: NAVIGATEEXT - this statement will navigate to an
arbitrary local file, whereas NAVIGATE will assume local files are
part of the e-book.
* New statement: CLEARCACHE - this statement will clear the cache of any
pages e-book from this e-book. Normally it should not be necessary to call
this statement.
* Bug fix: EXIT command was bugged and previously caused a GPF error. This
problem has been corrected.
* Bug fix: If an error occurred executing the RUN command, a description of
the problem was displayed, and then a blank message box. The blank message
box now contains text. As in previous versions, the script stops running if
this occurs.
* Bug fix: If an error occurred executing the OPEN command, a description of
the problem was displayed, and then a blank message box. The blank message
box now contains text. As in previous versions, the script stops running if
this occurs.
* New feature: Activ Script and Activ Variables can now be access from JScript
and VBScript code on the page. See example in the Help for more information.
INTERNAL CHANGES
* String handling of URLs has been modified. This has no visible effect on
the user interface of the compiler or e-book.
* Some internal code (creating toolbars, handling strings etc.) has been
rewritten for a smaller implementation code. This also saves space from the
final e-book EXE.
* Calling conventions modified (internal change), no visible effect except to
reduce EXE file size.
* Link options modified (internal change), no visible effect except to
reduce EXE file size.
* Removed unnecessary MS resources (internal change), no visible effect except
to reduce EXE file size.
* Algorithm for generating search results modified (internal change), no
visible effect except marginal performance / size improvement.
* Algorithm for generating system generated Table Of Contents modified
(internal change), no visible effect except marginal performance / size
improvement.
* Bug Fix: A number of files will were opened with a missing share mode
setting. While it could be argued that technically this was a bug, it did not
appear to have any visible effect.

CHANGES IN VERSION 4.21
=======================
---------------------------
CHANGES TO PACKAGE CONTENTS
---------------------------
DOCUMENTATION CHANGES
* Readme file updated with 4.21 information.
-------------------
CHANGES TO COMPILER
-------------------
BUILD MENU
* Bug Fix: Setting "My Password Status" to "No Password Entered" did not
always work correctly with ebooks that had had the correct password entered
with previous versions.
REGISTRATION
* Bug Fix: Fixed a bug (4.20 only) with restoring lost registration
keys after upgrading from 4.0x.
----------------------
E-BOOK RUNTIME CHANGES
----------------------
E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES
* Bug Fix: Fixed a bug which occurs when unpacking e-books with password
protection. This particular seemed to intermittently occur if the e-book
incorporated password protection, especially if the user entered the correct
password while reading, and especially if the security settings was set to
high.
* Bug Fix: The cache update algorithm was invoked twice on e-book
start-up, leading to an additional delay starting e-books. This bug was
only present in version 4.20.
* Bug Fix: The cache update algorithm has been redone in this version.
This new update should address a number of issues: (1) e-books should
start much more quickly on systems with large caches (seems especially
common on Windows Me and XP), (2) e-books should close much more quickly
on systems with large caches (common on Windows Me and XP). Problem (2)
could indirectly causing cause a "sharing violation" problem when compiling
an update to an e-book: because the e-book was still running (working on
the cache but not visible), the compiler would not be able to produce an
update (sharing violation) until the process completed, which in some
cases could take 1 minute or more. This bug was previously present in
versions 4.00, 4.01 and 4.20.
* Bug Fix: Version 4.20 (only) experienced a performance degradation
for compressed files which were larger than 256K.
* Bug Fix: Fixed a memory leak which could potentially occur if the
e-book contained files that were 0 bytes in length. As far as we
know, no problems as a result of this issue have been observed in the
field.
E-BOOK VIEWER USER INTERFACE CHANGES
* Bug Fix: There was a bug (memory corruption) in updating the status
bar, if the hide status bar links option was not checked (the default
setting). On most systems this seemed to only cause a cosmetic problem
(intermittent garbage text in the status bar), however on some systems this
could cause random crashes while reading the e-book.
* Cosmetic. Bug Fix: There was a typo in the PrintScreen not allowed message.
* Cosmetic. Added extra repaints if frame is activated or window resized.
In most cases this should have no visible effect, however this is include
as an attempt to resolve a repainting problem with an embedded application
(RealPlayer) that one user has reported with 4.20.
------------
ACTIV SCRIPT
------------
* Bug Fix: 4.00/4.01/4.20 contained the following bug/feature: if a
conditional/loop statement was nested within a conditional/loop which
indicate not to execute the inner code, the numeric parameters of
the nested/conditional loop was still evaluated. If these contained
numeric parameters containing Activ Variables which were themselves
created within the nested code, this would cause a runtime error.
Example: The following code would cause an error in 4.00, 4.01 and
4.20, on IF({x}
IF(0)
SET('x',1)
IF({x})
MESSAGEBOX('test')
END IF
ENDIF
On 4.21 and later this error should be corrected. If you need to
write scripts that work with earlier versions, be sure to assign
numerical values (any value will do) to variables used in
conditional/loop statements, at the outer most level of nesting.
Example, change the above to:
SET('x',0)
IF(0)
SET('x',1)
IF({x})
MESSAGEBOX('test')
END IF
ENDIF
* Bug Fix: There was a difference in initializing API Extension modules as
between 4.20 and 4.01/4.00. This difference has been corrected. While not
technically a bug, this change inadvertently could cause some API Extensions
to misbehave. The only known example of this actually occuring is in the
domain search API module used in Power Domain Search.

CHANGES IN VERSION 4.22
=======================
---------------------------
CHANGES TO PACKAGE CONTENTS
---------------------------
INSTALLATION
* Bug Fix: Installation was previously set to add the icons to the All Users
start menu if the user doing the installation had administrative privileges.
Icons are now installed under the current user's profile.
DOCUMENTATION CHANGES
* References to the CLEARCACHE statement in the Help have been removed.
* This README file updated
----------------------
E-BOOK RUNTIME CHANGES
----------------------
E-BOOK UNPACKING CHANGES
* Bug Fix: The following combination produced a page not found error
in versions 4.20 and 4.21: High Security for HTML files, Password
Protection enabled, My Own Page, No correct password entered.
* Bug Fix: The splash screen repaints if necessary (typically if user the
flips between applications whhile the e-book is starting) during e-book
start up.
* The shutdown sequence has been speeded up for High Security ebooks
by only clearing from the cache pages only HTML pages, and at that ones
which were actually visited or accessed in some way at some point.
E-BOOK VIEWER USER INTERFACE CHANGES
* Bug Fix: If an e-book is started while another copy of that e-book
is in the process of being closed down, this could cause the splash
screen to freeze or the e-book not to start at all. Bug fix is:
The freeze problem has been corrected. The not starting at all
should be extremely rare (if the e-book takes 30 seconds or more to
close down after disappearing) and in this a message is displayed.
* Bug Fix: E-Books made with versions 4.20 and 4.21 may crash while in use
(typically after the 3rd navigation event) on some Windows 98 machines.
This problem was caused by detection of the drag and drop event, which
was introduced in 4.20 to prevent drag and drop copying if copying is
disabled. The underlying cause of this problem appears to be a bug within
some of the components of some Windows 98 distributions. Therefore, the
detection of this event (and disabling of drag and drop if Copy is disabled)
has been removed in 4.22. We hope this measure will be temporary, and in
a future version plan to include the prevent drag and drop feature
using another mechanism.
* Bug Fix: Cosmetic. Toolbar buttons display images and surrounding area
properly when Windows colors are set to non-standard combinations.
------------
ACTIV SCRIPT
------------
* The experimental CLEARCACHE statement is removed from version 4.22 onwards
(it was only present in version 4.20 and 4.21).
=============================================================================
6. Known Bugs and Limitations in this version
=============================================
LIMITATION
----------
Summary:
E-Books which contain frames around external web sites may behave
unpredictably or even crash - if the option to automatically open
Internet links in a new window is selected (this option is in the
User Interface options).
Example:
Do not include HTML like this:
if you are using the auto-open option.
However this is okay: in all circumstances
Work-round:
We advise against framing external links as it will make your e-book
unusable by people who are not connected to the Internet when they
are reading it. However, if you must frame external links, we suggest
you can easily avoid problems, and still get the exact same effect as
auto-open by:
(i) Selecting not to automatically open Internet links in a new window in
Edit User Interface.
and (ii) Use TARGET=_blank for all external links you do wish to open in
the browser.
Resolution:
Previous versions of the software used to always behave as if the
auto-open option was selected. The new version is a considerable
improvement in terms of flexibility and user choice. We do not consider
this a bug anymore (but will continue to work on improvements in this
area) - however if you choose to create e-books that misbehave, we can not
always protect you from yourself.
LIMITATION
----------
Summary:
The dynamic pages generated by the Search option and the SEARCH and DISPLAY
commands are limited to a history of 1 level deep.
Example:
Do a search. Do another search. Go to a different page. The first Back
command will work correctly. The second Back command will still show the
results of the 2nd search.
Work-round:
None, this is a known limitation.
Resolution:
This limitation may, or may not, be fixed in subsequent releases.
BUG
---
Summary:
The string literal %20 is interpreted incorrectly as a space character
when included in an Activ Script command through a ## link.
Example:
The following HTML code Click
would display a message box contain 'Hello World' when the link is clicked.
Work-round:
Placing the script command in a separate file and invoking it using #! or
#@ solves the problem.
Resolution:
Hopefully this is not a serious problem, as this string does not often
occur, and the work round is simple. The problem is indirectly caused
by the behaviour of the Internet Explorer URL parsing code, and our
work-round for this behaviour. Unfortunately this means, a fix may not be
possible unless Microsoft changes this behaviour in a future version of
Internet Explorer - and even if they do - this problem may only be resolved
for users with new browser versions. Currently we propose to take no
immediate action on this issue, but will review the status going forward.
LIMITATION
----------
Summary:
Version 4.20 and later: PrintScreen and ALT+PrintScreen are disabled if the
e-book is running, not minimized, and copying is disabled (Edit Security in
the compiler). This in fact disables all copying of bitmaps to the clipboard
under these conditions rather than merel
